  • The new Speaker aims to complete the appropriations process in the next 23 days, which will test his ability to maintain the fragile unity of House Republicans.
  • He is a policy-oriented constitutionalist considered by his peers as a principled conservative.

Washington DC, Oct. 25 (DP.net).– Mike Johnson is a four-term conservative who represents Mike Johnson, SpeakerLouisiana's fourth congressional district, which includes nearly 760,000 residents. Johnson won the congressional seat with the largest margin of victory in his region in more than 50 years. He previously served in the Louisiana Legislature from February 2015 to January 2017.

With two decades of previous experience in Constitutional law, he serves on the House Judiciary Committee and on the Select Subcommittee on the Weaponization of the Federal Government.

Johnson is widely viewed as a policy-oriented and principled conservative. He is a vocal opponent of gay marriage and a supporter of bans on abortion. He typically votes in line with his Republican colleagues and has a 92% rating from the American Conservative Union and 90% from Heritage Action.

"It has been an arduous few weeks, and a reminder that the House is as complicated and diverse as the people we represent. The urgency of this moment demands bold, decisive action to restore trust, advance our legislative priorities, and demonstrate good governance," he wrote after his election.

"As Speaker, I will ensure the House delivers results and inspires change for the American people," he added. The first action of the House will be "the passage of a nonbinding resolution in support of Israel’s right to self-defense",  Mr. Johnson said.

After that, the legislative agenda focuses heavily on the completion of the appropriations process before government funding expires on Nov. 17. Mr. Johnson aims to pass the remaining eight appropriations bills in quick succession, which will allow the House to negotiate with the Democrat-controlled Senate.

The Johnson agenda includes completing 2025 spending bills by the end of July in order to avoid repeating the end-of-year frenzy over government spending.

In Congressman Johnson's Web page, he advocates that: «For individual liberty to be championed, government must be reduced. We believe, as our founders did, that legitimate government operates only by the consent of the governed and is more efficient and less corrupt when it is limited in its size and scope ...  Federalism, decentralized authority, and the elimination of unnecessary regulations and bureaucracy helps ensure that government serves the people and not the other way around. The best protection against government largesse is an engaged and informed electorate.»
